SiFive has announced a quad-core RISC-V development board. HiFive Premier P550, as it will be known, is built around an Eswin EIC7700 processor which has SiFive’s 64bit three-issue, out-of-order P550 cores, 256kbyte L2 cache and 4Mbyte L3 cache. It is collaborating with Canonical to ensure Ubuntu will run on the board, which is similar to a PC motherboard.

4. NXP reveals MCX MCUs with Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Bluetooth LE
NXP has finally revealed the wireless versions of its MCX microcontrollers, first announced in mid-2022. “Featuring the industry’s first MCU with Bluetooth Channel Sounding, NXP’s MCX W series enables edge devices with secure multi-protocol wireless for Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Bluetooth Low Energy,” according to the company, which explained: “Bluetooth Channel Sounding standard improves the accuracy and security of distance measurement compared to traditional Bluetooth for applications.”

Arm-Corstone-320-block3. Arm’s most powerful neural processor for microcontrollers
Arm has announced its most powerful microcontroller-grade neural processor, which will reach 4Top/s in its maximum configuration and is 20% more power efficient that its previous neural processors. Named Ethos-U85 and configurable with between 128 and 2,048 MACs, it is intended to have enough performance to locally run heavy AI algorithms such as ‘transformers’, as well as convolutional neural networks. Its tool chain provides support for AI frameworks including TensorFlow Lite and PyTorch.

2. Samsung to double Taylor investment
Next week (April 15th) Samsung is expected to announce it will build a second fab in Taylor, Texas plus funding for additional R&D and packaging facilities to bring its total investment in Taylor to $44 billion. In 2021, Samsung announced a $17 billion investment in Taylor for its first fab in the city. This week’s investment is said to be $20 billion for a second fab and $4 billion for a packaging plant plus increased R&D capabilities.
